The Sights & Sounds of NYCC 2019

New York Comic Con is always a great weekend for Star Wars fans, not only are there great panels with fun reveals (like the Lucasfilm publishing panel, which you can read our coverage of here) but there’s just so much fun Star Wars to be seen. We’ve compiled some of our favourites from NYCC, along with some coverage of Triple Force Friday and a review of the VR Experience Star Wars: Secrets of the Empire.
I was thrilled to attend my sixth NYCC this year, here is some of the fun I experienced this past weekend.
Weekend Recap
We recapped the weekend in full detail on the latest SWU Podcast, which also featured fellow NYCC attendee Chris “Starrapter” Abbott. We spoke about all the reveals as well as some of the fun we got up to, both at the convention centre and at the after parties. You can listen to the full episode below,
Hasbro Reveals
Hasbro hosted a special offsite event for press this year and our own Dominic Jones attended it, getting some pics of upcoming figures from the Black Series and Vintage Collection.
Journey to The Rise of Skywalker
While the upcoming film didn’t have a major presence at the convention, there were plenty of teases to be found. This included a panel with Billy Dee Williams, hints about what’s to come in the tie-in publishing initiative (you can read our panel recap here), and cosplayer who had already made his Episode IX Finn costume.
Live From New York, It’s Triple Force Friday!
Happening at the same time as NYCC was the launch of the products for The Rise of Skywalker, The Mandalorian, and Jedi: Fallen Order, otheriwse known as Triple Force Friday. Dominic headed out to the Disney Store in Times Square for the festivities. You can see some pictures from the event and hear his live report from the event on The SWU Podcast below,
Cosplay!
A feature of any convention is the fantastic costumes fans wear to the show. Whether they are professional craftspeople or fans doing their best, it’s always incredible to see. Check out some of our favourites from NYCC below,
Secrets of the Empire
One of the beauties of NYCC is that you’re not just at a convention, you’re in New York City baby! And with that comes the opportunity to experience all that the Big Apple has to offer. On day one of the con, I did just that and ventured off with my friend Chris “Starrapter” Abbott to the World Trade Center where The Void had a pop-up location for the virtual reality experience Star Wars: Secrets of the Empire.
It was absolutely incredible. You get to actually battle stormtroopers on inside Darth Vader’s castle on Mustafar, all while K-2SO is sassing you. Plus there’s an appearance from Diego Luna as Cassian Andor!
